Development VISTA for Recovery Cafe (Year 3)

The Recovery Café, part of Community Minded Enterprises, is a cost-effective way of providing support that individuals need to end a life of addiction. Located in an urban neighborhood near Spokane’s downtown core, the Recovery Café offers a drug- and alcohol-free environment for people struggling with addiction to receive and offer peer counseling and support. Sustained recovery breaks the cycle of poverty by reducing the societal costs of addiction and mental illness, including the financial cost of “high utilizers” of emergency rooms, hospital and courts. The idea is to help keep people on track, addressing small problems before they become big and expensive problems. The result is a stable workforce, stronger families and fewer people seeking a second or third trip to treatment. The model, known as Recovery Orientated System of Care (ROSC) has at its core what is called a Recovery Café. This position is in Eastern Washington, about 20 miles west of Idaho and 110 miles south of the Canadian border. Benefits include a living allowance of $472.22 biweekly. VISTA Members who successfully complete the year receive their choice of either a Segal Education Award (valued at approximately $6,000) or an $1,800 cash stipend. AmeriCorps VISTA is also the only AmeriCorps program where you can earn federal non-competitive eligibility, giving you an edge in the federal hiring process.

Member Duties : The VISTA Member will build on the work accomplished in the first two years of this project, when the Recovery Café moved from a dream to a reality. The focus of this final year will be on sustainability, both in terms of financial support and volunteer support, as well as ensuring that the Café is effectively reaching out to and supporting adults who are struggling with opioid addictions. The VISTA member will continue to build community awareness of this program through the annual Hands Across the Falls event, identify opportunities to collaborate with other community partners to meet the needs of this population, with a special focus on the opioid crisis, develop and expand financial resources needed to support the program's sustainability (donor development and grant writing), and support the development of a robust volunteer recruitment and engagement system. This position is in Eastern Washington, about 20 miles west of Idaho and 110 miles south of the Canadian border.
