*Goodwill VISTA* Center for Wisdom's Women, Lewiston
The mission of the Center is to be a sacred and safe place that supports and empowers women. It is a place where all women can gather to break their isolation, build community and enrich and better their lives. Since we are located in a very low income and high risk neighborhood, women bring with them the many troubles of poverty including abusive relationships, addictions, unfair treatment, mental and physical health issues, compromised nutrition and hygiene. The Center strives to nurture women’s self esteem and support them in overcoming the odds against them. Here together, women can build their inner resources, and develop their potential. It happens through deep listening and intentional hospitality; by providing activities, support groups and programs (many using art); by building partnerships with businesses, other agencies and service providers; and through advocacy on behalf of women. The primary value that underlies all the work is respect. Women of all races, ethnicities, classes, religions, backgrounds, and abilities are welcomed and valued for who they are. Each woman is treated with dignity and in a way that honors her as a unique individual. In addition to the residential program, the model also involves the creation of a social enterprise where the women can begin to do meaningful work in a small, respectful environment. Now in its third year, Herban Works makes healing products such as a salve, lip balm, tea and dried herbs out of calendula and herbs grown in our gardens. Women in these programs will be given the support needed to lead independent lives. CWW has become a unique oasis for women in the downtown and wider area. Any woman can come, any day, no paperwork, no appointments and at no charge. We are now a highly respected and valued resource in the neighborhood and city and with Herban Works and Sophia’s House we are becoming an even greater presence meeting the needs of women who have been disenfranchised.
