NYC VISTA: DOE Behavioral and Attendance Program VISTA

NYC Department of Education (DOE) supports and educations 1.1 million students in over 1,800 public schools throughout New York City. Specifically, the Office of Community Schools (OCS) supports students in temporary housing as well as students who attend 254 schools identified as Community Schools. Our work is directed solely at providing resources to students and families in high need, low performing communities. Universal vision screening, mental health services, data driven decision-making and tools, and in-kind donations (coats, hygiene kits, etc…) are among the many resources provided to students at Community Schools and those living in temporary housing. Additionally, OCS, and our VISTAs, will create systems and programs to support families and provide them with resources to help eliminate any barriers they may face in regards to their child’s education. VISTA members will provide the engines to move forward a slate of projects that support students from all sides. VISTA members will support creation of afterschool systems, document best practices at 21CCLC funded programs, document and internal systems for our school support teams, explore the work of other DOE offices and articulate practices specific to Community Schools and to address the needs of students in temporary housing.
