2019 – Michigan College Access Network and MPZA

The Michigan Promise Zones were created through state legislation enacted in 2009, and were designed to replicate the ground-breaking example of the Kalamazoo Promise, the nation's first universal place-based scholarship program. Eleven Promise Zones now exist in the state of Michigan, and all eligible high school graduates from these areas are guaranteed a tuition-free path to a college degree, increasing educational attainment and spurring economic growth. As our VISTA serving with the Michigan College Access Network (MCAN) and the Michigan Promise Zones Association (MPZA), you will create an urgency for postsecondary access across the state, with a particular focus on under-resourced communities served by Promise Zones. Your efforts would strengthen both organizations’ efforts state-wide, and you would identify and address the needs of these communities in relation to post-secondary success. You would also harness the power of data to increase the ability of both organizations to disseminate information across Michigan. MPZA is a key element of MCAN's commitment to helping Michigan achieve 60% educational attainment by 2025, and your efforts will help ensure that students in Promise Zone communities are receiving the support they need to thrive.
