SOTS - Tohono O'odham Nation Summer Associates, Sells, AZ

Our organization seeks to enhance the quality of life for Tohono O’odham Elderly and disabled adults by identifying, developing and providing quality services. Elders are still strong, we would like to encourage and support gardening at our centers and in Elders homes. Many of the traditional foods our Elders ate are very nutritious and also helped regulate blood sugar. Diabetes continues to be a major health issue in our community, from youth to elders. We would like Elders to continue harvesting traditional foods, with the assistance of the Summer Associates and Senior Service staff we will do this. If we teach Elders how to build raised gardens, make Elders aware of resources in the community to obtain materials or identify materials around their home to use for building a raised garden, give them the knowledge what to plant in the right season, we can begin to see changes in our Elders wellbeing, and this is just the beginning I hope to have Elders planting on their own in years to come.
