Serve New York VISTA 2019: Health Sciences Charter School

Serve New York mobilizes AmeriCorps VISTA members to serve organizations, government agencies, and educational institutions focused on expanding educational opportunities, ensuring economic opportunity for all, and creating healthy futures for the residents of NY. The goal of Serve New York is to strengthen communities across the state and to allow organizations within them to better provide services to impoverished individuals and families. The Serve New York program has partner organizations in Buffalo, Rochester, Syracuse, Bath, Ithaca, Geneva, and White Plains. While serving, members receive support from the VISTA team at The Service Collaborative of WNY, Inc. The support includes monthly training, a social network of fellow members, and daily support from VISTA leaders.

Member Duties : Founded in 2009, Health Sciences Charter School is one of the only college and career readiness high schools in NY State that provides traditionally under-served youth with hands-on exposure to the health sciences industry. In addition, the school provides urban youth with an understanding of setting personal and career goals that will result in economic stability, ending the vicious cycle of poverty most live in today. The VISTA member will join the Work Based Learning (WBL) team at the school and support the creation of new internships and engaging career readiness programming for students in grades 9-12. The overarching goal of the Health Sciences' VISTA project is to work with staff from the WBL program to increase the school's capacity to expose traditionally underserved students to multiple career pathways in the health sciences field through career exploration and readiness programming and place them in internships that will prepare them for the pursuit.
