Serve New York VISTA 2019: Stitch Buffalo

Serve New York mobilizes AmeriCorps VISTA members to serve organizations, government agencies, and educational institutions focused on expanding educational opportunities, ensuring economic opportunity for all, and creating healthy futures for the residents of NY. The goal of Serve New York is to strengthen communities across the state and to allow organizations within them to better provide services to impoverished individuals and families. The Serve New York program has partner organizations in Buffalo, Rochester, Syracuse, Bath, Ithaca, Geneva, and White Plains. While serving, members receive support from the VISTA team at The Service Collaborative of WNY, Inc. The support includes monthly training, a social network of fellow members, and daily support from VISTA leaders.

Member Duties : Stitch Buffalo was founded in 2014 and began with the simple desire to gather and create. We aim to empower refugee women of Buffalo by providing meaningful work and a fair wage. Through the creation of beautiful, handcrafted textiles, we nurture cultural heritage while assuring self-worth as women and humans. Current programming includes multicultural workshop for teens, and ongoing community workshops for refugee women alongside area residents whose fees help pay the refugee women who teach. Stitch has grown in volunteers, and donor contributions. The AmeriCorps member will direct stitch’s development efforts, standardize reporting to donors and grantors, and cultivate volunteers. The VISTA member will work closely with the executive director and board to determine metrics, assess community needs, and evaluate goals for a small-but-growing non-profit.
