SOTS-4Winds Indigenous Garden Summer Associates, Denver, CO

The consequence of over two centuries of US colonizing policy is that nearly 70% of Native people have been displaced from their traditional territories and now live in urban areas, such as Denver, and in the bottom of every socio-economic indicator in the US. To promote American Indian resilience, Four Winds provides a community stronghold for Natives to express our spiritual, cultural, environmental and political identity. Four Winds continues to nurture a community where the Native community participates in projects that include Native youth, the homeless population, women’s leadership and empowerment, two-spirit peoples, liberation direct action, decolonization of food and traditional ecological knowledge, and physical wellness programs. Our indigenous garden is thriving and growing pesticide free and GMO-free produce. The garden produces indigenous superfoods that may prevent early symptoms of obesity, cancer, diabetes, and liver and heart diseases. We are encourage healthy sustainable life ways through our hands on workshops, informational and visual presentations to connect with the natural world. We have faced lack of funding, however, to hire staff, to hire Native members of our community to grow and maintain our Indigenous Permaculture garden, and to maintain the buildings.
