Opportunity Council - WCHD - Healthy Futures YR2

The goal of this VISTA project is to expand local capacity to address childhood obesity and food insecurity in Whatcom County, and to promote the health and well-being of marginalized groups. Addressing food and nutrition-related issues as early in life as possible is critical to promoting long-term health and well-being. The population served by VISTA efforts will be low-income children and families in Whatcom County, with an emphasis on the Hispanic community. Our Year 1 Healthy Futures VISTA has supported an assessment of childhood obesity and food insecurity in Whatcom County. This process showed that Hispanic children and families in Whatcom County are more likely to experience both food insecurity and childhood obesity and that gaps exist in support services for this population. The availability of healthy food, healthy activities, and child supervision during summer months when parents are busy in the farm fields was identified as a particular need. This year 2 project with continue development of sustainable summer food and activity programming for Hispanic children in migrant camps and farmworker housing communities. The VISTA will implement a community-based project with Hispanic families as a way to raise awareness of food insecurity and nutrition concerns, and possible solutions. They will also support additional health department work focused on improving nutrition and physical activity for young children and families, particularly for low income, Hispanic, and other marginalized groups. Healthy, well-nourished children are more likely to be able to fully participate in school and activities that set them up for future success, including economic success.
