NYC Service, Office of the Mayor, Mentor Engagement VISTA

Work within NYC Service – a unit of the NYC Mayor’s Office dedicated to increasing volunteerism and service across the city – to build on our mission to provide resources and support to youth and prepare them for college and career success. The office’s mentoring initiatives engage corporate mentors to help underserved high school youth build social capital and connections, helping low-income youth successfully address a lack of access to supports and resources. NYC Service promotes three types of mentor support – running one time mentoring experiences to develop interview and communication skills; longer term connections through NYC STEP (an innovative 5 session mentor experience linking youth development programs to ongoing corporate mentors); and large scale citywide mentoring events. In addition, NYC Service also unites 40+ mentoring organizations and several city agencies in the NYC Mentoring Coalition, providing alignment and support to increase the number of NYC youth who are able to build social capital through mentoring experiences. The Mentoring Engagement VISTA will coordinate the initiative for NYC Service, building capacity of the program by updating mentoring events and activities, developing supports to train mentors and students to develop effective and productive relationships, and refining systems to recruit business partners and corporate volunteers for effective partnership. The Mentoring Engagement VISTA will also work to conceptualize NYC Service’s mentoring programming and the NYC Mentoring Coalition to be seen as a strategic tools to provide equitable opportunities and supports to NYC youth as they explore college and career options.
