Girl Scouts of Central Maryland Healthy Choices
GSCM is concerned with relevant issues that impact a girl’s journey into adulthood. These include activities that increase a girl’s readiness for and opportunities to: be successful in school; aspire to pursue rewarding careers; maintain productive interpersonal relationships with a foundation of strong self-image; and respect and appreciation for the outdoors/ecosystem and its resources. GSCM delivers on its mission through the provision of research-based programs in a variety of venues, using experiential learning techniques and producing impact in girls in K-12 in the national priority areas of STEM education/career aspirations, the outdoors, life skills and entrepreneurship. The Health/Wellness program developer will help address the obesity epidemic in Baltimore and impact the low educational achievement levels produced by poor nutrition. The program will provide access to healthy food choices, and increased physical activity. This position will sustain and expand on the existing partnerships with local subject matter experts including Johns Hopkins School of Public Health, resident food equity advisors, the Urban Orchard Project, the Heart Association, and others to collaborate on the design of a refined curriculum that is targeted to middle school aged girls, modeling, evaluation, resources and systems necessary for sustained implementation of programs in underserved communities.

Member Duties : The Americorps VISTA will expand capacity at GSCM to reach underserved communities of girls K-12 with emphasis this year on grades 6 through 8, for the delivery of age-appropriate, culturally competent health and wellness programming. The health component will take on new elements this year with the added considerations of a changing body through adolescence, and the impact on self- image and self-esteem that accompanies these changes.
