Families Moving Forward-NEST Programming Associate
Families Moving Forward, located in Durham, NC, is a local non-profit organization with a mission to offer a temporary home to families with children in the crisis of homelessness. We work together to help create a path to stability and self-sufficiency through personalized services and ongoing community support. Families Moving Forward provides emergency shelter to 21 families at a time. Families receive case management support and onsite programming is offered weekly for parents and children during their stay in the shelter, and after they have transitioned into the aftercare program. Aftercare case management is offered to all families once they move into permanent housing for 12 months. The VISTA member will work towards the mission of the organization by creating or expanding services offered. The VISTA member will focus on developing systems, communication processes, partnerships and resources to ensure the sustainability and expansion of the programs and services offered to Families Moving Forward’s current and former guests.

Member Duties : The VISTA member will improve sustainable programming for all shelter guests (adults, children, and the entire family unit), and to support the development of enrichment programming, in order to ensure guests have access to ongoing life-skills and academic learning opportunities while residing in the NEST shelter program. The VISTA member will be responsible for establishing a partnership with NC Museum of Life & Science collaborating to launch a 4-year project “Building Capacity for Co-Created Public Engagement w/ Science” initiative; develop a training manual for children and adult programming volunteer leaders; expand community partnerships to provide support with workshop facilitation, family activities, etc.; develop a committee to advise on curriculum development and children’s needs; work with Workforce Development Associate VISTA to expand teen fellowship program; expand teen programming; establish community partnerships to provide weekly life-skills workshops.
