Our Neighbors Table: Food Resource Advocate

Our Neighbors’ Table (ONT) is the leading organization fighting hunger in 12 communities in northeastern Essex County of Massachusetts. Our services include a weekly meal, and weekly markets filled with fresh, nutritious foods. In 2018, ONT declared Amesbury a hunger-free community. ONT is now on track to do the same in three more communities – Newburyport, Salisbury, and Merrimac – by the end of 2020. As ONT’s VISTA member, you have a chance to be an integral part of this movement by building our ability to reach vulnerable community members in need of services. ONT is a small grassroots organization working on the north shore of Massachusetts, 45 minutes north of Boston and an hour away from the mountains of New Hampshire. ONT’s Food Resource Advocate VISTA Member will help implement a new outreach program to connect those in need with resources that work for them, are convenient, reliable, and meaningful. The VISTA’s projects will include developing follow up procedure and protocols for families identified as food insecure at health care provider screening sites, recruiting and training support volunteers for follow up program, and networking with local service providers to increase familiarity and utilization of programs. In addition, this VISTA member will play a crucial role in preparing Our Neighbors’ Table to become a SNAP Outreach Partner. The VISTA member will collaborate with every member of ONT’s 10-person staff, and be an active part of the ONT Program Team (responsible for running, implementing and expanding ONT’s grocery and meal program to serve food insecure individuals). ONT’s VISTA member will gain concrete experience at this innovative organization. ONT values personal development, hands-on training, and networking as a part of this VISTA experience. This is a dynamic position that will include interaction with the public, volunteers, clients, and health care providers through phone, email, and face to face communication.
