* ACVISTA- Gateway Community & Children's Center
In the state of Montana only 41% of the demand for childcare is being met. In the Flathead County only 27% of demand for childcare is being met for children under the age of 5. Currently there is a need for an additional 800 childcare slots in the Flathead county. According to the Best Beginnings Advisory Council Early Childhood Needs Assessment and Strategic Plan 2013, Early childhood programs are often central in creating stability for children and families. Quality child care supports healthy development and school readiness in children, and also impacts parents’ ability to work, which in turn affects family stability in terms of meeting basic needs such as affording housing and food. Additionally, there is a huge need in the Flathead Valley for childcare, afterschool and summer programs. There are only 2 afterschool and summer programs currently in the valley. Children in afterschool & summer programs are more likely to have higher test scores because of the extra time devoted to certain subjects in school. Unmet demand for afterschool programs in Montana has grown from 26% in 2004 to 38% in 2014. According to, 70% of parents agree that afterschool programs help children gain workforce skills and 61% of parents agree that afterschool programs excite children about learning. Because the subsidized Children's Center will be operating under the Gateway Community Center, it can reduce the rates for low income families. Increasing access to childcare would help an estimated 2,700 low income individuals in Montana enter the labor force. Women with young children are more likely to participate in the labor force in counties with greater access to childcare. The Children's Center will alleviate poverty by helping low income children learn and succeed in school and by allowing the mothers in our community to enter the workforce because of the easily accessible childcare that will now be offered for low income families.
