*MTCC VISTA- The Literacy Center of Northwest Montana
The National Center of Education Statistics estimates that 8% of the people in the Flathead County lack basic prose literacy skills. We distribute books to 15 agencies in the community that serve low income children, individuals and families and around 40 low income individuals have been attending Plates and Play. Children with parents that have low literacy skills have a 72% chance of having low reading levels themselves. Continuing the Literacy Center and it's projects will help the low income families increase their literacy skills. The Literacy Center’s offices are located at the Gateway Community Center which is within a two block radius of five large low-income subsidized apartment complexes. The children and youth living in these apartment complexes attend Russell, Elrod, and Peterson Elementary Schools in School District #5. At each of these elementary schools a large percentage of the student population is eligible for free and reduced lunch; with 68.63% at Russell, 66.21% at Elrod, and 65.60% at Peterson. The Literacy Center is developing programs that will specifically target children and youth in these low to moderate income neighborhoods. Providing local children and youth with educational literacy programs will increase academic performance among low-income students, which will reduce poverty through increased graduation rates and academic success.
