This position is part of the 826 National Network VISTA Program and is located at 826michigan in Detroit and Ann Arbor, MI. 826michigan inspires school-aged students to write confidently and skillfully in collaboration with adult volunteers in their communities. 826michigan’s writing and tutoring programs uphold a culture of creativity and imagination and support students in establishing strong habits of mind. Through publication and community engagement, the organization provides students with an authentic and enthusiastic audience for their writing. 826michigan’s programs provide an energizing creative outlet for students and meaningful volunteer opportunities for community members. With one-on-one attention from caring adults, students improve their academic performance, develop a sense of belonging, and discover the unique value of their voices. With this understanding in mind, 826michigan provides drop-in tutoring, field trips, after-school workshops, in-schools tutoring, and assistance with student publications. 826michigan also believes that the more fun a student has, and the more directly programs speak to a student’s interests, the more it can help students find the fun in learning. That’s why 826michigan’s programs are more than just extra homework. All programs are challenging and enjoyable, and ultimately strengthen each student’s power to express ideas effectively, creatively, confidently, and in his or her individual voice. VISTA members will have the opportunity to create new systems and enhance current efforts related to volunteer recruitment, training, and retention and support in-school and on-site programming.

Member Duties : The 826michigan Student Engagement and Impact Associate will help to develop and implement systems that support the growth of our signature writing programs in Detroit. Activities will include planning and executing writing workshops, book release celebrations, and other programs; collaborating with program and communications staff to plan and execute effective communication strategies with families, schools, and community partners; working with the Volunteer Coordinator to build relationships with local organizations as volunteer pipelines, expand outreach initiatives, and maintain and improve current systems for volunteer management; creating communications for current, potential, and lapsed volunteers with a goal of matching volunteers with the writing and tutoring program opportunities that best fit their interests, skills, and availability; and working with the Program Manager to identify data-driven areas for growth in alignment with the 826michigan strategic plan.
