Dishman Hills HS Resource & Academic Support Specialist

The member will partner with the school to eliminate barriers to attendance and help students and families form positive attachments to the school community. Struggling students and their families have a hard time navigating the maze of services. There are plenty of resources in a community, but rarely is there someone on the ground who is able to connect these resources with the schools and students who need them most. Through a school-based specialist, we bring these local resources into the school where they are accessible, coordinated towards the same goal. Our model’s integrated focus on academics, health and social services, youth and community development and community engagement leads to improved student learning, stronger families and healthier communities. Through a school-based site specialist, our initiative strategically aligns and leverages needed resources so that students can focus on learning. The member will serve as a liaison with the content departments on the content and scheduling of tutoring, which includes homework help, test preparation, and basic skills strengthening. The student support specialist will foster relationships with students to increase attendance, tracking of student progress. On occasion, provide direct academic tutoring to students.
