SOTS- Pawnee Nation Summer Associates Program, Pawnee, OK
The Pawnee Nation provides services to two counties where approximately 615 tribal members reside. The counties have a lower median household income, a higher poverty rate, slightly fewer adults aged 25 or older that have high school, and a higher unemployment rate than Pawnee County overall. Given these facts we will be mentoring with 18-24 year old tribal young adults to develop leadership skill and capacity to strengthen local food systems. The food system is a major factor affecting the health of individuals and communities. While a myriad of factors contribute to types and amounts of food consumed, the food environment, including limited access to healthy foods and high access to unhealthy foods, can influence food choices and impact diet-related health outcomes such as obesity, diabetes, and cardiovascular disease. Food “access” can be divided into three main categories, including informational (nutrition and cooking knowledge), economic (poverty, food prices) and geographical (distance to healthy food retails). The main barrier to eating more healthy foods was price, followed by time limitations to buy and prepare fresh food, the availability of fresh food, the quality of fresh food, and the distance to a grocery store with fresh food.
