Liberty Rec and Tech Center

In the fall of 2013, as the result of the closure of over two dozen Recreation Centers in Baltimore, management of the Liberty Rec and Tech Center became the responsibility of the adjacent school and the overall community. The center quickly became the cornerstone of the neighborhood’s community wrap around initiative, providing programming for students and families which included after school activities, parenting classes, a food pantry, workforce development programming, and a full slate of activities aimed at enriching the community. Over the course of the past four years, we have continued to build the program, using a needs assessment and constant communication with the neighborhood to create a robust slate of activities that has grown in amount, rigor, and sophistication with each successive year. We feel at this point in order to continue improving the initiative and bringing a level of stability that will last into the next decade, we could use an AmeriCorps Vista volunteer to help establish a board of directors, create structured systems to manage the Rec Center complex, recruit dedicated volunteers who are committed to support the recreation center’s vision in the long term, and codify a series of policies to help sustain the Rec Center after the departure of the Vista volunteer at the conclusion of their term. Each week the Recreation Center provides programming for about 400 unique users and remains one of the few community operated recreation centers in Baltimore City. The primary mission for the development of the Recreation Center project is to create a nationally recognized, community operated Recreation Center program that supports robust multi-generational programming, activities for children that accelerate their academic and social development, and leadership opportunities for the larger community which strengthen our neighborhood and provide families with a productive outlet.
