Cougar Literacy Corps
 
 
 
As a University of Houston Cougar Literacy Corps – AmeriCorps member (UH CLCA) tutor you will work 15-23 hours a week with Houston Independent School District (HISD) elementary students in the UH Third Ward Community Partnership schools. You may work one-on-one with our young students or provide small-group reading tutoring sessions. In addition, you’ll have opportunities to engage and collaborate on community service projects and serve as a role model for the youth in our community. As a UH CLCA tutor you will be fully equipped to support students’ reading success while also gaining valuable experience and networking opportunities to support your future career endeavors. Targeted literacy training will be provided by UH, HISD and the Barbara Bush Literacy Foundation. Ongoing training's and support will be available to all tutors during the entirety of their membership and assignment. Members will have recurring access to vulnerable populations. Together, members will work to improve the lives of students in our community through promoting and achieving literacy!

Member Duties : Please note: Must be a current University of Houston undergraduate or graduate student. • Conduct one-on-one tutoring sessions with students using, evidence-based literacy interventions • Assist children in improving their reading skills and abilities to reach grade level expectations. • Provide opportunities for family literacy involvement UH CLCA students, including implementing the UH CLCA family engagement literacy intervention: UH CLCA - Read at Home! (RAH!) and My Home Library. • Assess, with a high level of accuracy, students’ continual progress using ongoing benchmark assessments and ongoing progress monitoring assessments. • Regularly review student data with Site Supervisor and Member Coordinator to gauge the effectiveness of the literacy intervention being used and determine if a change in strategy is necessary. • Participate in coaching sessions (includes observation of tutor); act on constructive feedback from coaching sessions
