Sunset Area Latino Community Development Specialist

Part of an eight-member VISTA team supported by a VISTA Leader. This VISTA member will serve with St. Vincent de Paul of Seattle-King County’s Centro Rendu & focus on using tools of community development & engagement to combat poverty in the Sunset neighborhood, a diverse and economically disadvantaged area in Northeast Renton. During the project’s first year, the VISTA member address the challenges confronting the Latino & Spanish-speaking population in the Sunset neighborhood. Engagement activities mean working with residents, businesses, the City of Renton, Renton School District, St. Vincent de Paul Society, & other partners to address neighborhood issues & needs, & build capacity & sustainability. The VISTA member will plan & participate in Sunset Area community events, as well as in St. Vincent de Paul Society parish conference events & meetings. These activities will help improve relationships & grow partnerships to strengthen collaborations & opportunities for the community to connect & address root causes of poverty. These new connections and opportunities for building capacity in the area of basic needs & resource access, will help to increase resilience, stability & self-sufficiency particularly with Latino & Spanish-speaking families in the Sunset community. This will help break the cycle of poverty by strengthening the social fabric of the community, as well as improving the ability of low-income residents to work together to address their own needs & respond to emerging issues. By supporting strategies that help to increase diversity, inclusion, & participation in the work of St. Vincent de Paul Society, the VISTA will be helping to increase the capacity of the organization to support the growing Latino community through opportunities for leadership development, access to services, increase social capital, & authentic family & community engagement.
