Benson Hill Community Development Specialist

Part of an eight-member VISTA team supported by a VISTA Leader. This VISTA member will serve with the City of Renton focusing on community development & engagement as a tool to reduce poverty in the Benson Hill community, an economically disadvantaged area in Southeast Renton annexed to the city in 2008. The City is the lead organization for the Benson Hill Community Plan. During the project’s first year, the VISTA member will focus on building capacity & sustainability in the community by building rapport & trust with neighborhood residents, local businesses, & community partners to foster connections, identify community needs, & work together to improve the neighborhood’s quality of life. The VISTA member will rely on these connections to implement community events, neighborhood improvement projects, & community engagement opportunities to assist in identifying the best ways to address the community challenges that resident’s face. This will help break the cycle of poverty by strengthening the social fabric & safety of the neighborhood & provide residents opportunities & resources needed to create a neighborhood organization capable of shaping a strong, vibrant, & healthy community. The VISTA member’s community development efforts will help improve neighborhood image & safety & cultivate neighborhood pride to combat challenges that exist within areas of concentrated poverty. The VISTA member will write grants to support small neighborhood improvement projects that can be executed with residents on a grassroots level. Through these efforts, the VISTA member will work toward building greater resilience & self-sufficiency among neighborhood residents & businesses & expanding opportunities for everyone in the community. Renton has a population of 104,100 residents & is located on Lake Washington. The city has excellent parks for outdoor activities & outstanding access to public transportation to Seattle & other parts of the Seattle metropolitan area.
