Summer Associate Program at SEEDS

Summer Associates will address issues for youth living in areas of persistent poverty in rural Northwestern Lower Michigan. Summer Associates will serve in SEEDS After School Summer Camps, which aim to prevent and offset the well documented “summer slide,” provide meals to children living in communities of persistent poverty, and provide the social and emotionally rich learning environment that prevents substance abuse as well as many other societal ills associated with discontent, lack of social capital, and lack of agency as drug prevention. SEEDS Summer Associates will further address challenges of food insecurity by helping the Traverse City Farmers Market to provide customers and families with food assistance programs including EBT/SNAP, Double Up Food Bucks (a program established to stretch EBT/SNAP dollars). Summer Associates will work with SEEDS resident farmers to assist in growing fresh fruit and vegetables to distribute to local food banks through partnerships with Food Rescue as well as assist in coordination of donations with other community partners such as the TC Community Garden.
