UM’s freshman retention rates are lower than the national average. First generation and low income students graduate at an even lower rate (36% compared to 48%) according to College Factual. The cycle of poverty continues when first generation and low income students do not graduate from college. Service learning is a high impact practice, one that many schools are now requiring their students to participate in because many educators report seeing student engagement, academic achievement, and civic responsibilities increase through service learning (Center for Global Education). The University of Montana offers a wide variety of academic enrichment opportunities for students: civic engagement, internships, study abroad, undergraduate research and creative activity, National Student Exchange, and more. These programs have a positive impact on new student recruitment, retention, student success (graduation rate), and improved post-graduate career opportunities. A study conducted in 2016 found that service-learning has a positive effect on academic outcomes for low income, first generation college students. The study reports that “above and beyond the influence of pre-college characteristics and college experiences, low income first generation (LIFG) students’ participation in service-learning courses was positively associated with college GPA—perhaps the most indicative and certainly the most common measurement of academic achievement. The persistence of a relationship between participating in service-learning and college GPA, despite including other variables in the model (e.g., race, high school GPA, primary major, and institutional selectivity,) suggests that service-learning is a meaningful activity for LIFG students’ academic success. With the VISTA’s help, UM’s Office for Civic Engagement will increase the impact of its service learning program, helping low income first generation students successfully graduate from the UM.
