NLADA Community Partnerships VISTA - Field CT

Because the quality of justice in America should not depend on how much money a person has, NLADA leads a broad network of advocates on the front lines to advance justice and expand opportunity for all by promoting excellence in the delivery of legal services for people who cannot afford counsel. This new VISTA project, Defending Communities in Service, will build sustainable community relationships and data systems and practices that allow participating public defender offices to more holistically support communities in need. During the first year of this project VISTAs will build capacity within their host organizations focused on two separate tracks of service: Community Partnerships or Data Systems. The Community Partnerships VISTAs (that's you!) will serve as the driving force connecting their hosting Public Defender office to other justice system stakeholders, community organizations and service providers, strategic leaders, and to other relevant local National Service operations. These connections will help the public defenders to more effectively provide wraparound services to their clients and to more clearly understand and communicate the overall local services landscape upon which their clients rely. All NLADA VISTA project members will explore opportunities to utilize technology and automation to create communication and data-sharing channels between public defenders and human services organizations designed to last beyond the period of their projects, with minimal maintenance required.

Member Duties : The Division is focused on strengthening its community engagement plans. A successful VISTA will lead work to identify and implement practices to bring the voices of the communities we serve into our planning, everyday practices, and plans for moving forward. Our VISTA will direct an effort to develop a detailed plan of what opportunities for partnerships exist with criminal/juvenile justice agencies and initiatives as well as civil, public, and private organizations. This project will allow us to become a strong voice in what affects the needs of our clients. To achieve this, the VISTA member will assist us in determining how to further engage communities, hear their needs, and recognize them as experts in their own right. The VISTA will create surveys, analyze data, and make recommendations for achieving these goals. In addition, he/she will create manuals, curriculum, and training events for our staff and stakeholders in order to create a sustainable model for the future.
