Communications and Community Engagement Coordinator

The Communications and Community Engagement Coordinator (Coordinator) participates in a yearlong term of service (1,700 hours) providing capacity-building services in support of Plant the Seed’s mission to inspire and empower young people through garden-based learning — connecting them to their food, the earth, their education, and one another. PtS serves more than 1,300 young people weekly in school and community settings through partnerships with seven public schools and five public libraries. PtS believes everyone has a right to fresh, affordable, culturally-relevant foods and that young people are capable of effecting meaningful change in their diet, lives, and communities. They see sowing, preparing and sharing food as a powerful tool for a lasting education, cross-cultural conversations and growing together in community. PtS is a very relational organization, and this AmeriCorps member helps establish and strengthen those relationships. The member assists with developing and implementing communications, such as social media strategies and seasonal e-newsletters, and tabling at community and partner events. The member also supports and develops community engagement systems, including partner trainings and volunteer development. PtS aims to be a strong placement site for individuals wanting to learn the ins and outs of a growing nonprofit, who are unafraid of a good day’s work, don’t mind jumping in and getting dirty, and want to encourage growth in themselves and others. The Hands On Nashville AmeriCorps Program engages civic-minded individuals in yearlong terms of public service. AmeriCorps members are part of a 17-person cohort that receive skills training, professional development, and networking opportunities through a partnership between HON and participating AmeriCorps Program agencies. HON does not discriminate based on age, gender, race, ethnicity, sexual orientation, disability, or other factors which deny the essential humanity of all people.
