'19-'20 Achievement Gap Coordinator VISTA

Millions of children throughout the country lack access to the educational opportunities they need to succeed. In many low-income neighborhoods, an overwhelming majority of children lack the reading & math skills to perform at grade-level. Summer is a critical time because children can lose two or more months of academic skills when not engaged in structured learning. This phenomenon, combined with other factors, is known as the Achievement Gap & is directly linked to whether students attend college preparatory classes, graduate high school & enroll in four-year colleges. Research shows that expanded learning time–particularly in the summer–is one of the most effective strategies for boosting student achievement & eliminating both opportunity & achievement gaps. Power Scholars Academy (PSA) is the South Sound YMCA’s response to close the Achievement Gap. PSA identifies scholars who are at risk & engages them in high-impact academic instruction & mentoring for five-weeks during the summer. These scholars engage in a variety of academic & enrichment offerings. All instruction is delivered in small groups by certified teachers who employ research-based, data-driven curricula. Enrichment instructors lead structured activities such as music, art, science & physical education. Scholars also visit museums or other educational destinations, participate in community service projects & interact with guest speakers. Summer learning opportunities like PSA are shown to play an important role in a child’s academic success, as well as their social, physical & emotional development. In the 2019-2020 school year, the Y is aiming to expand PSA & Achievement Gap programming into afterschool in the South Sound. The VISTA will be a member of United Way of Thurston County’s VISTA team, made up of 19 other VISTA members & supported by the VISTA Leader, who coordinates professional development opportunities, provides individualized support & resources & supports the program’s success.

Member Duties : The Achievement Gap Coordinator VISTA will work closely with the Program Director to achieve the goals of the VISTA project. The VISTA will help research, design & implement structure for new summer & afterschool academic programs. The VISTA will then support scholar recruitment by creating a recruitment timeline that includes school district & administrator meetings, faculty presentations & scholar application processing. The VISTA will also support the recruitment of highly-qualified academic teachers & enrichment specialists, develop training materials & segments for facilitators, support high-quality programming with weekly observations & staff feedback sessions, and support program-related event planning. Public speaking may be possible. As a result, the VISTA member will build capacity for the South Sound YMCA to fight poverty through closing the Achievement Gap & supporting the future success of students by providing access to continued educational engagement outside of school.
