* AC VISTA- Accelerate Montana - University of Montana

University of Montana's students are leaving between their freshman and sophomore year at a rate of 32% according to the Missoulian. Low income Native American students on campus are leaving at far higher rates, according to VP of Enrollment, Tom Crady. With this project, Accelerate Montana hopes to help Native American students (high school and college) and other disadvantaged populations stay in and be successful in school through building problem-solving skill sets. These efforts will help graduate these students and help them post college to be adept to solve critical community and global problems. This project will also help low income high school students access entrepreneurial curriculum and thinking to help these students build post-secondary skill sets. According to the Montana poverty maps, in Western Montana alone, zones begin at 10% poverty and grow to a more severe 30% or more category on reservation land. According to the National Center for Policy Analysis, higher average rates of entrepreneurship in a state correspond to bigger declines in poverty; in fact, every 1 percentage point increase in entrepreneurship corresponds to a 2 percent decrease in the poverty rate. With a focus on rural, Native American, and disadvantaged populations, this project seeks to expose entrepreneurial methodologies to give new tools to high schoolers, college students and faculty, as well as alumni to be successful in school and beyond. This VISTA will have an opportunity to setup programming inside Western Montana's high-poverty places inside the state, write and research grants to run additional programming on and off campus, and collaborate with our vast network of campus and community organizations to help these students succeed.
