* AmeriCorps VISTA- G. Gallatin United Way Resiliency

The stigma surrounding mental illness is high among our citizens and possibly higher among the Greater Gallatin community. Various sources of information continue to amplify the reality that people in the Greater Gallatin community are struggling in various ways: • Community Health Needs Assessment data indicates a majority of respondents report feeling sad; • High rates of depression, anxiety, alcoholism, and suicide in Montana; • Budget cuts from the last legislative session catastrophically undermined the mental health system across the state with drastic effects in Bozeman; • Anecdotal reports from community leaders continue to echo the need for relief for residents due to the stresses of lack of affordable housing, low wages, and other factors compared to the high cost of living. The stigma around mental illness can be overcome through intentional actions, language choice, and education starting with the individual and building up to the community level. It can also be overcome at the agency/institutional level with supportive policies and workplace culture. Through building compassion and mental health awareness in the population at large and with a targeted focus on veterans, we have greater potential of supporting people in maintaining their employment and strengthening human rights by developing policies and laws that protect the rights of people with mental and psycho-social disabilities. Depression is a major factor in disability in the developed world. Disability limits economic possibility and can keep people in poverty; a high percentage of people experiencing this struggle are veterans. Given the persistent intersection of poverty and mental illness, any effort to improve mental health resources and recovery will have a direct impact on reducing poverty.
