'19-'20 Youth Engagement Coordinator VISTA

Washington Trafficking Prevention’s (WTP) work is focused on empowering youth by training adults and facilitating program in-schools and in out-of-school youth-serving agencies and empowering communities through community Coalitions Against Trafficking groups. The VISTA will fight poverty by helping end exploitation of the most vulnerable in our communities. The VISTA will do so by highlighting the need and strengthening the capacity for youth to join the fight against human trafficking. We believe that while no one person alone can end human trafficking, together, with our youth, we can address the culture that tolerates and contributes to exploitation. The Take On: Youth Empowerment Program targets middle and high students in schools and out-of-school in youth-serving agencies. The program provides them with ways to learn, discuss, and do activities that engage their beliefs about a range of topics like empathy, gender stereotypes, healthy relationships and sexual exploitation. By strengthening this program we can involve more young people, and the caring adults that work with them, to learn about human trafficking and change individual behavior and cultural norms to help prevent human trafficking in our communities. The VISTA will be a member of United Way of Thurston County’s VISTA team, made up of 19 other VISTA members. The UWTC VISTA team is supported by the VISTA Leader, who coordinates professional development opportunities, provides individualized support and resources, and supports the program’s success.

Member Duties : The Youth Empowerment Program has 4 phases that the VISTA will help implement. The VISTA will support each of these phases as teachers, parents & students are engaged in the process of preventing human trafficking. •Phase 1: Train school/youth-serving agency personnel to identify signs of trafficking, respond effectively & create a protective environment for young people •Phase 2: Build curriculum on trafficking for facilitators to use with an audience of parents/families •Phase 3: Train program facilitators from school/agency to lead the Take On: Youth Empowerment Program •Phase 4: NEW Youth Led Programming, expanding upon the Take On curricula young people have experienced. Implement train the trainer processes for youth and facilitators; support the development of systems and processes for the new Youth Led Programming phase.
