*Goodwill VISTA* Ladder to the Moon, Portland

Ladder to the Moon Network’s mission is to raise awareness of the scope of conflicts in Africa in order to shed light on causes of migration to Maine; raise awareness about the considerable economic, linguistic, and cultural challenges African immigrants face here; provide helpful information so newcomers can navigate life in Maine, build stable lives for their families here, and contribute to the well-being of the state. The populations served include immigrants from Africa - a conservative estimate of 15,000 statewide - as well as Maine locals. Our organization helps build bridges between locals and African-born New Mainers by increasing mutual understanding. Ladder to the Moon Network’s programs include publication of the free monthly newspaper Amjambo Africa! Content includes articles on workforce development, on immigrants who are looking for employment, on immigration policy, profiles of individuals who have navigated the transition to Maine successfully, cultural comparisons, articles by youth, articles that explain how our workplaces and financial systems work, how to establish credit, and start to save for the education of children. The paper’s intended audiences are the 15,000 African-born Maine residents, and Maine locals. We distribute to 170 locations state-wide with our physical paper and anticipate doubling readership with our online edition. We distribute to 5 schools as well as three universities. Our aim is to build bridges between communities. Visit laddertothemoonnetwork.org/home.html
