'19-'20 Food Drive & Volunteer Outreach Coordinator VISTA

For over 45 years, Nourish Pierce County has been dedicated to providing nutritious food to those in need with compassion, dignity & respect. As the largest network of food banks in the county, we operate 7 brick & mortar food banks & have 2 award winning semi-trailers/mobile food banks that serve an additional 17 sites in each corner of the county. Nourish Pierce County & its programs provide support to the 1 in 7 Washingtonians living in food insecure environments where they do not know where their next meal will come from. Food insecurity can affect anyone. Most of our customers are the working poor, homeless & unemployed. Our fastest growing population is seniors & 32% of the customers we serve are children under the age of 18. Walk into any Nourish Food Bank & you’ll see a room organized much like your local grocery store, with one notable exception: at every aisle a kind volunteer helps busy parents & elderly shoppers alike. While our goal is to provide each individual or family with enough food to make 3 meals a day for 3 days, Nourish is so much more. Hugs are as plentiful as the food. Stories are shared, lives are touched because we Nourish our clients & each other with compassion, dignity & respect. At Nourish we believe that no one should go hungry--children &families, the elderly, the working poor & homeless. That is why we exist. We provide more healthy, nutritious food to clients than any other organization in Pierce County. The VISTA will be a part of this team, fighting poverty by leveraging resources to ensure that people have access to basic needs like food. We could not do this work if it were not for more than 1,000 committed volunteers who help us provide these services. The VISTA will be a member of United Way of Thurston County’s VISTA team, made up of 19 other VISTA members and supported by the VISTA Leader, who coordinates professional development opportunities, provides individualized support & resources & supports the program’s success.
