Thurston County Volunteer Legal Services (TCVLS) is a non-profit organization that helps low income individuals and families represent themselves in civil proceedings. Our clients have income less than 200% of the Federal Poverty Level and cannot afford to hire an attorney. Volunteer attorneys help people prepare to represent themselves by providing legal advice and information about court proceedings. Occasionally, pro bono attorneys are identified to represent the client. TCLVS volunteers serve over 1,500 clients per year, addressing mostly family law and housing issues. Last year there was a 30% increase in the number of visits to our Housing Justice Project. At HJP, attorneys represent those having eviction hearings and also give general advice about landlord-tenant issues. TCVLS gives attorneys the opportunity to give back to their community. We have about 100 attorneys who volunteer at various levels throughout the year, but we always need more. TCVLS has a major funder--Legal Foundation of Washington--that provides a grant that covers about half of our expenses. We must raise the other half locally. We have one major fundraising event each year. The VISTA will be a member of United Way of Thurston County’s VISTA team, made up of 19 other VISTA members. The UWTC VISTA team is supported by the VISTA Leader, who coordinates professional development opportunities, provides individualized support and resources, and supports the program’s success.

Member Duties : The VISTA will increase our capacity to serve the low income communities in our four county service delivery area. The VISTA will work with both the Executive Director (who is responsible for fundraising) & the Program Coordinator (who is responsible for recruitment & retention of volunteers). The VISTA will help strengthen our relationships with donors & volunteers by increasing our visibility with them, through newsletters, social media & appreciation events. The VISTA will identify funding sources, support writing grants & plan events. The VISTA will increase our profile with other social service providers by attending common meetings & encouraging referrals for our services. These activities will build capacity to support access to civil legal aid. Access to civil legal aid alleviates poverty by helping vulnerable populations retain housing & provides services that stabilize families’ economic future & supports their ability to navigate the financial repercussions of legal issues.
