*AmeriCorps VISTA- University of MT Vets. Advocacy Clinic
Montana has the second highest per capita veteran population in the nation, and nearly half of those veterans live in rural communities. The MT Veterans Advocacy Clinic (VAC) assists veterans across the state, in person or remotely. The free legal services the VAC provides addresses legal issues that cause veterans to fall into homeless and food insecurity due to very low income. The last Montana Supreme Court Access to Justice Commission statewide study found Montana’s veteran population was intensely affected by gaps and barriers to legal assistance, leaving many civil legal needs unmet. The ABIII School of Law administration has been supportive of the VAC by allowing the supervising attorney and faculty supervisor, Professor Wandler, to use a portion of her full-time faculty workload to supervise students in representing veterans. However, the VAC does not have independent funding. Funding would allow the VAC to meet with rural veterans in person when needed, particularly when the veteran or family member is elderly or has no transportation funds. It would also allow the VAC hire support staff other veterans advocacy clinics with greater capacity have in place, like a dedicated paralegal or staff attorney. The VAC's supervising attorney and students are over capacity addressing legal needs of veterans and their families, so having a VISTA service member focused on identifying funding sources, developing those resources, and assisting and coordinating community partnerships would greatly aid in the VAC's work, making the clinic more effective and building its capacity to serve a greater number of veterans and collaborate with a greater number of community partners serving veterans.
