Seeds of Change AmeriCorps VISTA YR 2
 
 
 
Alaska Seeds of Change is a safe space for homeless youth to learn job skills that will increase their future employability and retention in the job market. Raising community awareness and support of the program is crucial to its ongoing outreach and success. We teach youth life skills and provide long-term support to foster stable growth toward independence. We rely on the combined efforts of youth and adults to develop a sustainable social enterprise business, ensuring that our community will grow strong and vibrant for generations to come. The surplus produce harvested at Alaska Seeds of Change is donated to the Food Bank of Alaska. VISTA outreach will include strengthening ties with local food security programs and creating channels for efficient, regular, and increasing food donations.

Member Duties : The VISTA member will help formalize and expand our use of volunteers to help with both greenhouse production tasks, and to find additional and subject-specific mentors for our youth staff. In addition the VISTA member will coordinate social media outreach efforts. The third project element we propose is to begin preliminary work to bring small scale hydroponic vegetable production to rural Alaska, possibly working through the existing AmeriCorps and Head Start programs.
