CoF Teen and Volunteer Outreach Coordinator VISTA

The overall goal of this project would be to have a positive impact on the number of teens graduating high school and having healthy lifestyles in Fairbanks, Alaska. The BGC needs help with developing enriching activities for the teen population. Sustainable teen programming will help the growing teen population feel a sense of belonging both at the club and within the community. These programs will focus on helping at-risk youth achieve success in school and prepare them for a bright future by promoting financial literacy, healthy relationships and lifestyles, and employment training. Imagine growing up in a city of extremes. Fairbanks, Alaska has limited and expensive access to medical care, areas listed as food deserts by the USDA, high cost of living, and is also one of the coldest cities in America. In this community, teenagers are vulnerable to the effects of poverty. Many do not have a safe place to call home, dropping out of school, and struggling with health conditions such as obesity, depression, and other medical issues. Our primary goal for the VISTA is to expand anti-poverty programs for teens at the Boys & Girls Club of Fairbanks. This will be done by evaluating current teen programs, then redesigning and developing our teen programming. The VISTA will recruit volunteers, sponsors and donors to ensure the sustainability of the BCG’s anti-poverty programs. The VISTA will have the opportunity to train volunteers, write manuals, and develop a sustainable framework for the future of the teen and volunteer programs. This is a volunteer service position with a living allowance of $1,333 per month and an annual education award of $6095 or cash stipend of $1,800.
