'19-'20 Community Engagement Coordinator VISTA

Mountain View Community Center (MVCC) resides in the small community of Edgewood, Washington in East Pierce County, part of what was come to be known as the North Hill. The creation of the Center was part of a larger vision to build a new home for the Edgewood NOURISH Food Bank that was located on the campus of Mountain View Lutheran Church. Over 1 million dollars were raised from the congregation to construct the new facility which was opened in 2009. The Food Bank occupies the first floor of the building; MVCC occupies the second floor. These three separate non-profits, alongside general community support, work collectively together to serve the community, ease isolation, and combat food insecurity for the most vulnerable. Mountain View Community Center is celebrating its 10th Anniversary this year. We offer internal programs and host other service providers to build successful kids, hopeful families, and active seniors in our community. Monthly, we provide 3,000 meals and snacks to hungry children through our weekend food pack program and 400 dinners to food bank clients and locals looking for a hot meal and company. Twice each week, 40 seniors attend exercise and share lunch. In 2018, we recorded over 4,000 hours of volunteer service to make these programs possible. Mountain View Community Center has a small staff, mobilizing and empowering volunteers to accomplish big things in our community. With help from a VISTA member, we believe that we can build capacity and create a larger network of support by increasing our volunteer and donor base; foster connections and market our programs into our larger community. In doing so, our overall resource development will be strengthened, enabling MVCC to effectively fight poverty and become a more sustainable organization. The UWTC VISTA team is supported by the VISTA Leader, who coordinates professional development opportunities, provides individualized support and resources, and supports the program’s success.
