*MTCC VISTA- Great Falls LGBTQ Center

LGBTQI youth do not have the support they need to be successful in school. They are often rejected by family, friends, schools, peers, communities, etc. Not feeling accepted can and often does lead to dropping out of school, becoming homeless, suicidal ideations, and substance abuse, which all contribute to the cycle of poverty. The Great Falls Public School District reported 25% of high schoolers have seriously considered suicide. Of the same population surveyed, 17% of youth reported being bullied due to their sexual orientation (GFPS Youth Risk Behavior Survey Snapshot 2017). An article published in Smithsonian Magazine highlighted the existence of a GSA will lower suicide rates among all students. In schools with GSAs the odds of suicidal thoughts were cut in half for lesbians, gays and bisexuals. By creating Welcoming Schools within Great Falls Public Schools, LGBTQI youth in Great Falls will have the support and resources they need (but do not currently have) to be successful in attending and graduating high school and then transition into higher education. While the struggles of the poverty cycle are painfully real, accessible and affordable education is available in Great Falls. This VISTA project will help build a stronger bridge for students in transition. With wraparound support, students can and will succeed in breaking the cycle.
