*MTCC VISTA- Racial Equity Project

According to the 2017 YWCA Missoula Racial Equity Report, “the lack of diversity in Montana and little support for people of color has an impact on their experience.” The report goes on to say, that “disparities in education, whether in the lack of school supplies, text books, program funding, or suspensions, have correlated with poverty, less economic mobility, and a lower likelihood of obtaining an advanced degree.” MTREP’s VISTA project will help minority students across the state of Montana gain support and resources necessary to maintain school attendance, obtain their high school diplomas and go onto higher education. Studies show that racial/ethnic disparities in educational achievement and attainment are partially explained by the effects of race-based stressors, such as stereotype threat and perceived discrimination, on psychological and biological responses to stress, which, in turn, impact cognitive functioning and academic performance. Additionally, the persistence of prejudice and violence within schools negatively impacts student mental health, esteem, and academic performance. According to the 2017 Montana Youth Risk Behavior Survey, 42.6% of Native American students felt so sad or hopeless almost every day for two weeks or more in a row that they stopped doing some usual activities (compared to 29.3% white students). 28.2% of Native American students seriously considered attempting suicide (versus 19.6% of white students). The VISTA will build programming to educate low- and very-low income, minority students in high school and middle school, their parents/guardians, and teachers and faculty on racial literacy to create a safe space for students to achieve educational success and graduate high school.
