* AmeriCorps VISTA- Missoula College University of Montana

This VISTA project seeks to solve two community problems: 1. The population of dually-enrolled high school students at Missoula College has boomed from 460 (AY2018) to 730 (AY2019). Missoula College anticipates serving over 1000 students in the near future, many of whom will be low-income. This partnership with regional high schools requires additional support with developing advanced on-boarding and orientation for these low-income high school students to Missoula College. Dual-enrollment allows low-income youth the opportunity to earn college credits at no cost while in high school, this saves these students money in the long run because they would have to pay for these credits if they waited to earn these credits after completing high school and fully enrolling in college. Furthermore, by becoming dually-enrolled these disadvantaged students are ahead of their peers, able to graduate earlier, and are able to enter the workforce sooner. 2. Missoula College students in previous years have proven their need for supportive services in the areas of accessing registration, financial aid, tutoring, disability services, healthcare, career counseling, and registration services. During AY2019 the student advocate program made over 350 student referrals at Missoula College. With the anticipated increase in students, Missoula College must meet the needs of students and provide supportive services to all who request it. With the common existing barriers (less-than ideal elementary, middle, and high school education, non-supportive family/friends, financial restrictions, mental health issues, etc.) that disadvantaged students face the last thing these students need are additional barriers when considering college or starting college. The Student Advocate Program eliminates additional barriers making the transition into secondary education successful for disadvantaged youth.
