Workforce Action Plan VISTA

Three VISTA members will employ and hone their research, report writing, and community engagement skills to build new programs and teams equipped to reduce poverty rates in the City of Cincinnati. A cross-departmental approach including City Planning, Health, and Economic Development departments will encourage VISTAs to develop creative approaches to deep-rooted issues. They will also gain insight to a range of municipal governance functions as well as local non-profit and community organization networks. This position will be based in the Community and Economic Development (CED) department with a focus on completing a Workforce Action Plan (WAP) started by our 2018-2019 VISTA. Part of CED’s broader mission is to improve the lives of Cincinnati residents, and the WAP will help accomplish this by outlining actions steps for the City and its partners to reduce and eliminate barriers to employment for certain target groups. CED also strives to increase business investment in Cincinnati. A WAP that clearly outlines the strengths of our region’s workforce, as well as what needs to be done to fully leverage its skills, will help drive this investment.

Member Duties : The 2019-2020 VISTA will be tasked with completing the Workforce Action Plan initiated in 2018. This includes accessing, compiling, and reporting on demographic data (i.e. Census, Bureau of Labor Statistics). It also includes researching common issues experienced by peer cities as well as best practices to remove barriers to employment. The VISTA will also need to establish a methodology to inventory and engage all organizations providing services related to workforce training within Cincinnati. Engagement will involve scheduling interviews, conducting surveys, as well as other methods. This information will ultimately be organized into a WAP that clearly outlines existing conditions, identifies gaps in terms of support services and policies, and outlines short- and long-term recommendations for the City and workforce stakeholders.
