This project will help ensure that children within the Poughkeepsie City School District (who have a 33.3% poverty rate) receive the educational, social, and emotional support they need to achieve their educational goals. The VISTA will facilitate the implementation and management of the development of community-based school service learning activities, events, programs and services that lead to student achievement, stronger families and healthier neighborhoods within the Poughkeepsie City School District. They will increase the effectiveness and scale of our current service-learning program. The VISTA will provide leadership for the coordination of community school efforts evolving from school sites and service agency partnerships. In particular, the VISTA member’s activities will include collaborating with community partners to assess needs of the community which in turn the institution and its students can provide. The VISTA position at Dutchess Community College will play a key role in Service Learning and Civic Engagement initiatives involving the DCC students, faculty, staff and our community partners. The VISTA will work closely with the Coordinator of Service Learning in the expansion of the service learning initiatives and the development of a broad based comprehensive service learning program. Campus Compact of New York and Pennsylvania VISTAs (CCNYPA*VISTAs) are part of a VISTA cohort of 40 members placed at higher ed. institutions across PA and NY to build campus-community partnerships. Professional development opportunities, including specialized workshops and retreats, and support to the VISTA cohort will be provided throughout the year of service.
