*MTCC Greater Gallatin United Way Early Childhood Education

The demand for high quality, accessible early care programs in the Greater Gallatin area is extremely high. According to statistics drawn from the Childcare Under the Big Sky (CUBS) system, the state’s childcare tracking system, there is a two-year waiting list for infant and toddler care and a one year wait for 2 to 5-year-old care. In rural areas of Gallatin County, these wait times are even higher due to an extremely limited supply of early care programs. Using info from CUBS, the quantified total number of new early care slots needed to match current demand in Gallatin County: 340 new infant care slots are needed to increase from 340 to 680 and 160 new 2 to 5-year-old slots are needed to increase from 1607 to 1767. These needs in Gallatin County closely match the needs in the entire state of Montana and the nation. This VISTA project will contribute to the alleviation of poverty by supporting the expansion of high-quality, affordable early care and education programs in Gallatin County with a special focus on expansion in rural communities. The ALICE (Asset Limited Income Constrained Employed) economic impact report which the VSITA will create and disseminate will help Gallatin County understand the financial pressures experienced by families faced with child care costs and by child care employees who have a hard time making ends meet themselves, many of which are currently living in poverty.

Member Duties : The VISTA will create the ALICE (Asset Limited Income Constrained Employed) Economic Impact Report. In creating the ALICE, the VISTA will specifically explore and identify ways to increase child care slots by researching expansion efforts in areas of the country and recommending strategies to Child Success Coordinator and workgroup. The VISTA will connect with the Child Success Coordinator to understand past and current work Gallatin County to expand child care slots, research online other childcare expansion strategies happening across the country, contact other organizations completing this work to learn and make recommendations to Child Success Coordinate for strategies to implement. The VISTA will develop a toolkit for businesses and community leaders on ways they can consider supporting/increasing early care and education opportunities; work to design and implement the importance of early childhood promotional plan that will include social media, print, and public presentations.
