*AmeriCorps VISTA- MonTECH -University of Montana

MonTECH is located in Missoula, Montana at the University of Montana. The goal of the VISTA project is to increase the physical activity of Montanans with disabilities and disabled veterans through creating systems for outreach, repairs, training, and education of the Wheels Across Montana (WAM) program. The WAM is a free bicycle loan program for veterans in Montana. Increased physical activity can reduce secondary conditions such as ulcers, urinary tract infections, osteoporosis, and pain. By decreasing these conditions, people are spending less on healthcare and preventing the entry into poverty or moving out of poverty. Recent funding cuts to programs for people with developmental disabilities in the state of Montana have left many people with reduced access to and funding for adaptive equipment. 50% of participants borrowed bikes from WAM because they could not otherwise afford an adaptive bike. While current community partners are widely distributed across the state, Great Falls does not offer a WAM site yet would greatly benefit from one since there is a large veteran population in this area. The VISTA will help to create the new Great Falls site where residents with disabilities would benefit from improved access to adaptive equipment. Great Falls, is centrally located, accessible to trails, has had historic requests for bikes through another loan program, and support and interest from the community. Great Falls has a military base located nearby, Malmstrom Air Force Base, and veterans comprise more than 10% of the local population. Creating a WAM site in this area would provide military personnel and veterans with more access to adaptive equipment.

This training includes a manual that can be shared with new community partners in the future, The VISTA will connect with community partners to organize Adaptive Recreation clinics at sites in Billings, Fort Peck, Dillon, and Helena, The VISTA will organize the event and create a "how to" Adaptive Recreation toolkit so that the events can exist following the VISTA's year of service, The VISTA will create a promotion toolkit so that future clinics can be promoted without having to create new tools.
