*MTCC VISTA Office of Commissioner of Higher Education

According to the Montana Office of the Commissioner of Higher Education, low income students are at greater risk of not completing postsecondary education. While the MUS and affiliate campuses’ approach to creating supportive learning environments is holistic, this project recognizes the particular need for building more robust capacity to coordinate and deliver mental health and wellness programming, especially as low-income students experience mental health issues at disproportionate rates to their higher social-economic status peers and may be less likely to seek help when they do need it (National Center for Health Statistics, 2011). With an increase in mental health issues among America’s college-aged students and without mental health and wellness programming offered to low-income students we can expect college graduation rates to decrease. By increasing the access to Montana University System’s mental health and wellness services for low-income college students, this VISTA project can help increase college graduation rates for low-income students in Montana.
