*MTCC VISTA- University of Montana Food Pantry

The University of Montana Food Pantry is located in Missoula, Montana. The goal of the UM Food Pantry is to provide free food and hygiene products to UM students, staff, and others experiencing basic needs insecurity, in a confidential and dignified way. This will increase performance and graduation rates, which will lead to students to successful careers. Student food insecurity is a growing problem in the U.S. Students may be less eligible for SNAP and other public assistance programs due to certain requirements for students to qualify. Financial aid may not be enough to adequately address student food needs, especially depending on their student status. According to a 2018 Wisconsin Hope Lab study, the largest national survey of its kind, approximately 36% of university students experience food insecurity, and their larger study the previous year found that approximately 56% of community college students experience food insecurity. A lack of consistent healthy food can drastically reduce student’s ability to perform at their best due to significantly decreased energy and concentration. Providing free food to students in need will not only help them live healthily, but also succeed in completing their education and attaining a degree to pursue a career, which will increase graduation rates and employment as a result.
