Stewards VISTA: Southwest Conservation Corps Ancestral Lands

The Ancestral Lands model is rooted in the culture and heritage of local tribal and indigenous communities. The power and impact of AL programming is due to the community investment and support for each program tribally and locally. Ancestral Lands engages Native and indigenous youth and young adults in meaningful conservation projects on ancestral lands. Ancestral Lands participate in crew-based or individual placement conservation programs, working with local, state, federal and non-profit agencies and organizations. The Ancestral Lands program also aims to incorporate traditional culture and language as part of crew lifestyle and project work. The City of Albuquerque Open Space Division (Open Space) works to acquire and protect the natural character of land designated as Major Public Open Space in the 1988 revised City of Albuquerque Comprehensive Plan. These land, which comprise more than 29,000 acres in and around Albuquerque, are managed to conserve natural and archeological resources, provide opportunities for outdoor recreation, provide a place for low impact recreation, and define the edges of the urban environment.
