CoF ThrivAlaska Education Specialist Summer Associate
 
 
 
Four VISTA Summer Associates will work with teachers in different full day classrooms at Head Start Birth to Five. Head Start/Early Head Start is a holistic program serving children and families who are living in poverty, in foster care, are homeless, experience domestic violence or substance abuse, are incarcerated, or deployed. We serve the neediest of the needy families in Fairbanks. Services for children are provided Monday through Thursday, with Friday being a professional development day. Summer Associates will help ensure children with special needs or disabilities receive individualized attention which will have a positive impact on their emotional and social development. Each classroom is fully staffed, the Summer Associate will work alongside teachers by directly working with children, individually and in groups, engage in relationship building, helping teachers with activities, providing emotional support, reading to children, playing with children indoors and outdoors, modelling language, block building, playing games, and engaging during mealtimes and transition times. Free meals will be provided to the Summer Associates. On Fridays the Summer Associates will assist teachers in developing upcoming activities, attend training events, help re-arrange room environments, clean toys, and attend staff meetings. Summer Associates are an AmeriCorps volunteer program. Summer Associates in Fairbanks receive a monthly living allowance of $1,358 and an education award of $1,289.95 or a stipend of $345.80 for completing all 10 weeks.

Member Duties : Assist the ThrivAlaska teachers provide quality education to ensure school readiness among low-income children. Activities will include: • Work individually with children, providing needed one-on-one emotional support • Build a relationship with each child in the classroom • Assist teachers with activities for children indoors/outdoors • Model language and “play” with children indoors/outdoors • Assist ThrivAlaska staff with youth conflict resolution if needed • Work with ThrivAlaska staff to identify student’s allergies and special dietary needs to ensure dietary restrictions and needs are met • Serve meals and snacks to youth enrolled in the program • Monitor children during meal and snack times • Help ThrivAlaska Center staff clean classroom after meals and snacks
