CoF Fairbanks Youth Advocates Outreach Summer Associate
 
 
 
The Fairbanks Youth Advocates operates The Door, the only youth emergency shelter in Interior Alaska. Youth homelessness spikes in the summer months in Alaska and FYA increases anti-poverty programming during this time to meet the increased demand. The FYA Summer Associate will assist in meal preparation for youth experiencing homelessness, lead gardening activities with the youth staying at The Door, planning and coordinating the community outreach event One Homeless Night and assisting in marketing efforts for The Door. The person in the position will develop social media, youth mentorship and community outreach skills. Summer Associates are an AmeriCorps volunteer program. Summer Associates in Fairbanks receive a monthly living allowance of $1,358 and an education award of $1,289.95 or a stipend of $345.80 for completing all 10 weeks.

Member Duties : The FYA Summer Associate will assist youth experiencing homelessness and staying at The Door. Activities include: • Prepare and package meals • Clean kitchen and other spaces after programs • Lead teens in recreational activities including gardening, art projects, etc. • Educate teens about gardening practices, plant needs/nutrients and nutrition while promoting sustainable gardening • Assist in harvesting and processing finished products that can be used in The Door’s kitchen • Help secure sponsors, volunteers or other necessary items for the community outreach event • Aid in logistical assistance and support leading up to summer outreach events • Engage in outreach and promotion by assisting homeless youth with running FYA’s social enterprise, The Closet Door and summer garage sale • Attend local community meetings with supervisor to promote Fairbanks Youth Advocates and its projects • Assist in flyer making and distribution
