CoF Access Alaska Summer Work Program Summer Associate

High school age students in special education programs are mandated to receive services to aid in the transition from high school to adulthood, but these services can be limited. Access Alaska fills the gaps providing comprehensive services for employment and independent living skills within local high schools throughout the school year. Access Alaska expands upon this education with a hands-on, intensive Summer Work Program (SWP). The SWP works towards the goals by giving students knowledge and skills in hard skills, soft skills, and independent living skills, including real work experience, job seeking skills, professionalism, self-advocacy, soft skills, financial literacy, and real-life experiences sampling jobs in the local community. The two VISTA Summer Associates will aid Access Alaska staff in planning educational hours and coordinating hands on work experiences at local businesses, constituting two four-week programs for 20 students. Summer Associates will work alongside staff and SWP participants at worksites, helping to provide guidance, mentoring and positive behavior modeling to students and will assist in educational activities and lessons. Each participant will create budgets, draft cover letters and resumes, and other real-world applications. The SWP participants will have individual research projects that will challenge them academically. At the end of each SWP session, Summer Associates will help staff to evaluate the 2020 SWP; identifying improvements and best practices. Access Alaska prioritizes Summer Associate recruits who can function as peer mentors with similar lived experiences including: disability status, socio-economic status and are recent high school graduate. Summer Associates are an AmeriCorps volunteer program. Summer Associates in Fairbanks receive a monthly living allowance of $1,358 and an education award of $1,289.95 or a stipend of $345.80 for completing all 10 weeks.
